An Explanation of Ram Memory For Your Computer

The memory of a computer is the amount of storage on it. There are four types of memory namely, the Random Access, Read Only, the Operating System and the Basic Input/Output system.

When the computer is turned on, the BIOS is accessed first which is a flash based memory format and helps to boot the computer. ROM transfers data to RAM so that the applications can be run and performed, as instructed. The flash based memory operations happen in video, BIOS, and USB flash drives. The number of rewrites is limited and if a condition called "flash burn" happens wherein, the number reaches a saturation point; the flash device becomes corrupt and unusable.

The memory of the system can be placed in many places and in many ways, ranging from cache to buffer and ROM to RAM. As the functioning of the system and the speed depends upon how much memory it has, the sluggishness can be mainly attributed to inadequate RAM. Inadequate RAM can lead to shared RAM/memory where the system's memory will be shared between the CPU and the video memory. That is, when the computer uses its own memory for operating system and other applications, the memory is also shared to run video or graphics and the system would report significantly low memory.

So, while buying a computer, it is imperative to check the specifications to find out the amount of memory installed and its maximum capacity. This would help in the event of a need arising to upgrade the memory for enhanced performance. Basically, the memory requirement depends upon the applications that are run on the system, the operating system being used and the peripherals attached. For intense video gaming, VISTA like operating systems and peripherals like webcam, more memory would be needed. Normally, for ordinary PCs a memory of 2GB to 4GB would do. Where 4GB is the maximum of RAM you can have in a windows XP machine other newer operating systems such as Vista and Windows 7 can support much more.

If the memory installed in the computer is not sufficient even after up gradation, it is now feasible to have external storage in the form of memory cards. Technology has advanced in leaps and bounds in the memory card field and there are incredibly tiny ones that can store a library full of data, news and videos.

There are many formats of memory cards, the most popular being the SD (secure digital) card. The capacity of SD cards range from 1 GB to 12 GB and manufactures vie with one another day- in and day- out to bring in more and more innovations in memory cards. More memory means more convenience and better performance but it must be checked before upgrading whether the system is compatible.
